SATURDAY, MAY 30TH...LATE GOALS SINK SURGE AS TIMBERS WIN 1ST IN RIVARLY
     Surge Home Wednesday Night, Before Six Players Head to Austria
The Cascade Surge battled the Timbers U23's evenly until the 85 minute  before a defensive error and a goalkeeper error helped the more experienced Timbers to a 4-2 victory.
   In the first match between the new rivals the game was tied 2-2 at the halfway mark after Surge goals by Arron Patrick and Grant Knight.  The Timbers took over sole possession of first place (4-1-1) while the Surge fell to 5th place (2-3-0)

WEDNESDAY, MAY 27TH...SURGE FACE TOP TWO TEAMS IN NW DIVISION               
     Team continues Community Work and launches International Outreach this Week
The Cascade Surge face the Portland Timbers U23s Saturday at Kiggins Bowl in Vancouver, (WA), then host the Kitsap Pumas on Wednesday, June 3rd. Currently the Timbers (3-1-1) and Pumas (3-0-1) are tied for the early lead in the NW Division.
   "These games will give us a good test as to how competitive we are in this early part of the season," said Surge Coach Mike Alfers, who has led the Surge to a 2-2-0 record so far.
    The Portland Timbers game will be the first ever between the new "in state" rivals. The Surge hasn't had an "in state" rival since the Corvallis based Firebirds, folded for the second time in 2000, while the Pumas game will be a rematch of the 3-0 loss the Surge suffered last week in Bremerton.
  
"We have had divisional opponents in Utah and as far away as Calgary (Canada) so it's nice to have a local rival," said Surge President Dave Irby.  "With the Timbers joining MLS next season play their U23 team and some possible future MLS stars will only build more enthusiasm for our rivalry."
   
Team Notes:  The Surge are hoping team Co-Captain Grant Knight and goalkeeper Steve Reese will be back from injuries that have prevented them from playing yet this season...NAIA All-Americans Zach Patterson and Armando Rodriguez may see there first action of the season.
Kiggins Bowl is located at 800 E. 40th Street in Vancouver, WA behind Discovery Middle School.
In the Community:  The Surge continues their schools visits to Washington and Swegle Elementary Schools this week, with a theme of: "Study hard, play fair, help others."
Camps & Academy:  The Surge will launch their new full day soccer camps program June 22 in Keizer with a second camp in South Salem beginning July 20 with the advanced Academy set to begin July 6 in Keizer.
International: The team will be invovled in international outreach projects in three countries this summer:  Stuttgart, Germany (May 29-June 5); Vienna, Austria (June 4-11) and Tecate, Mexico (July 21-24).

MONDAY, MAY 25...ON MEMORIAL DAY THE THE SURGE SAY "THANKS" TO THOSE WHO sacrificed, to give us the freedoms we enjoy.  NOTES:  Zach Patterson, the All-American defender from Mt. Vernon Nazarene arrives today, the final player to arrive...Surge players continue their visits to Swegle and Washington Elementary Schools...Josh Gelser and Joe Mueller leave for Stuttgart, Germany on Thursday to run the Anstoss zur Hoffnung soccer camp that raises money for poor children in Mozambique http://www.anstoss-zur-hoffnung.de/en/) 

SATURDAY, MAY 23...SURGE CRASH AND BURN AT KITSAP, LOSE 3-0
In a PDL NW Division match, which also counted as an Open Cup qualifier, the host Kitsap Pumas rolled over the Surge 3-0 in front of 889 spectators at Bremerton Memorial High School.  The win advanced the Pumas to the next round of the Open Cup while the Surge were eliminated.  The loss dropped the Surge to 2-2-0 in league play.  
 
FRIDAY, MAY 22...TETEH SPECTACULAR IN DEBUT, HITS FOR "HAT TRICK"
The former leading scorer in the Sierra Leone Premier Division, Teteh Bangura, made a spectacular debut in the US as he scored goals in the 21st, 65th and 70 minute to lead the Surge to a 4-0 victory over the visiting Spokane Spiders.  Alex Rouse, who came on for Teteh in the 75 minute added the fourth goal; Juan Chang added two assists and goalkeeper Brandon Cave once again anchored a stellar Surge defense.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 20...SURGE PREPARE FOR HOME MATCH THEN TRAVEL TO KITSAP 
The Surge host the Spokane Spiders this FRIDAY, MAY 22ND AT 7:05 PM, then hit the road to play the Kitsap Pumas on Saturday.  All Keizer Soccer Club players wearing their jersey get in for $3 on Friday night.
TEAM NOTES:
  Teteh Bangura arrives today from the Cleveland City Stars (Divison I-USL).  The leading scorer from the Sierra Leone (Africa) Premier Division will add some "firepower" up front once paperwork is cleared through the USL. The Surge are still waiting on International Clearance for Likius Hafeni and Steve Reese....All-American Armando Rodriguez arrives Thursday, and All-American Zach Patterson arrives on Sunday.
IN THE COMMUNITY:  The team will put over 600 hours into schools visits the next few weeks at Washington and Swegle Elementary Schools and in soccer clinics  at the Keizer Soccer Club. INTERNATIONAL:  Josh Gelser and Joe Mueller will head to Stuttgart, Germany May 28th to help run the Anstoss zur Hoffnung soccer camp that raises money for AzH's project in Mozambique. They will join teammates- Briscoe, Burt, Cave, Knight, Patterson, Sippola, and Club President Dave Irby in Vienna, Austria for training and "park outreach" to youth (June 4-11).

SUNDAY, MAY 17TH...SURGE LOSE WILD ONE IN 90th MINUTE TO TACOMA, 4-3
Trailing 1-0 at halftime on a penalty kick, after defender Tom Milroy was Red Carded for a foul in the box; the Surge battled back to take a 2-1 lead; then tie the score 3-3 in the 87th minute on goals by Conner Burt (Sippola), Arron Patrick and Chris Andre (Sippola/Chang).  Unfortunately goalkeeper Aaron Franklin, subbing in the 77th minute for injured Brandon Cave, had a ball sail over his head leading to the winning goal for Tacoma in the 90th minute.  Ben Sippola gave the Surge one final chance in injury time as he was taken down from behind at the top of the box by a Tacoma defender who was Red Carded. the Surge's insuing free kick created a scoring chance that went wide. 

 
FRIDAY, MAY 15TH...SURGE WIN OPENER 2-0, OVER 15 YEAR RIVAL 
Miss Oregon USA, Sylvie Tarpinian, "symbolically" scored the first goal of the season, in the pre-game festivities; and Juan Chang (7th minute) and Chris Andre (16th minute) struck for "real goals" as the Cascade Surge defeated their 15 year rivals the Yakima Reds 2-0 in the season opener for the Surge. Playing in front of over 600 partisan fans at McCulloch Stadium Juan Chang ripped his first shot of the season past a stunned Robert McCurdy as the fans were still settling into their seats.  Chang's goal was followed just 9 minutes later by a volley over McCurdy by Chris Andre.  Solid goalkeeping by Brandon Cave and  steady defense by the Surge's backline of Woodward, Burt, Milroy and Swenson kept the Reds at bay the rest of the night.
Lineup: Cave, Swenson, Milroy, Burt, Woodward, Andre, Patrick, Sippola, Harris, Chang, Marquez.  Substitutes: Babson, Stoddard, Kaufman, Murphy.

Mike Alfers, the new Head Soccer Coach for the Cascade Surge, is coming off of an exciting 2008-09 collegiate season at Cascade College where he led the Men’s Soccer Team to a record setting 11 wins. The ‘08 Thunderbirds also made their 1st post season appearance since 2001, making it to the conference semi-finals.  In his three years coaching at Cascade; 2 as an assistant and 1 as head coach, the team posted a record of 29-25-0. A tremendous improvement from the 3-40-3 record amassed over the three years prior to his arrival. Mike has over 10-years of soccer coaching experience and holds NSCAA and USSF credentials. He has worked with teams in Oregon, Washington, Maine and Kansas. In addition to his duties as the Surge Head Coach Mike is the Camp Director and Staff Coach at Hillsboro Soccer Club.  Prior to beginning his coaching career Mike played collegiately at Allen County Community College. As a sophomore he captained the side and was named two time NJCAA player of the week. Coach Alfers earned an Associates Degree from Allen County and a Bachelors Degree at Barry University, where he graduated with honors. Recently he was awarded his Masters in Business Administration from Marylhurst University. Mike and his wife Teresa reside in Beaverton, OR and are proud parents of two boys Perkins (2) and Mateo (8 mos.)
